Job chapters 1-2 April 25, 2007

We can learn that humanity bases their life upon reward and retribution principle.  They think that if you are good, good things will happen, but if you are bad, bad things will happen to you.  The humanity is willing to accept only good things, and when bad things happen, they are ungreatful.

What we can learn about God is that He is willing to prove to Satan that Job would be faithful to Him even if Job was suffering.  He was willing to “sacrifice” Job in order to prove his point.  Although in the end, it turned out even better than the begining.  God knew that Job would be faithful to Him.    God let satan ruin job’s life, so God let’s bad things happen to good people.

What we can learn about relationships is that you never know who you’re real friends are until something bad happens.  For example, we can observe Job’s wife.  She saw that Job was “aflicted” and  had lost everything.  She said “curse God and die!”  Maybe she was interested on how wealthy he was and not cause she loved him.  Even if you don’t agree with someone you care about, you should never say that to them.  Job clearly had a close relationship with God, because when he lost everything, he “fell to the ground in worship.”

We can learn about Job and his family that Job maintained his integrity to God which tells us he was very religious, and his children died and his wife abandoned him.

People I know are being subjected to the “pigs” and are mindlessly following.  In my opinion this happens often in a lot of churches (no offense to anyone)  People who are so devoted into their religion often make the mistake and end up worshiping their pastor or how ever you may call them.  Some follow them so blindly up to the point where they will believe whatever they say, even if you think it’s wrong.  Some have lost the central vision of why they go to church.  One way to solve this – in my personal opinion-  is to: not believe what everyone says, if you are unsure and for one second doubt what they say, you should ask them to prove it and try not to fall for their lies like the animals did with the pigs.

The Trial March 19, 2007

There were some positive and negative things about the trial.  In my opinion, we should have had more time to prepare for the trial. Some of the witness and lawyers were not fully prepared to debate, and I believe that is due to the lack of time to get everything together.  At the beginning, when Mr.  Amico was explaining how the trial was going to be, I thought it was going to be the worst experience and difficult to prepare for.  Now I believe it was great.  I enjoyed it a lot.  What I enjoyed the most were the witnesses and the open debates.  The witness that I enjoyed the most was Phoebe.  I think Emily did a great job portraying the character of Phoebe.  Another thing that I greatly enjoyed was the open debate for the book “CATCHER IN THE RYE”.  The people debating it had a lot of passion.  Overall, the trial was a great experience.

Tom and Mayella are similar in various ways.  Both of them are not able to control their lives and they are always being abused by the ones around them.  For example, when Tom is convicted of raping Mayella and is killed after he was put in jail.  His innocence was being abused because the evidence clearly showed that he was not culpable of raping her.  Mayella is constantly abused by her father.  How is that?  Mayella even said in court that her dad was constantly drinking and the evidence showed that it was her father who physically abused of her.

In addition, Tom and Mayella have-in my opinion-more differences than similarities.  First of all, the fact that Mayella is white and Tom is black is a huge difference.  Mayella stays home and does her work at home, while Tom works out in the field.  Mayella is convicting Tom of raping her, on the contrary Tom is being charged of raping her.  During the trial, Mayella is clearly seen that she is lying and even cries when she is being cross examined.  Instead, when Tom is being cross examined, he does not cry or even show any signs of lying.  These are just some differences in between Tom and Mayella.

In conclusion, in my personal opinion, Tom and Mayella are as “far apart as the percieved gap between whites and blacks in 1930′s Maycomb.”

Some people believe that it is unrealistic when Scout interferes with the mob, and saves Atticus as well as Tom.  However, I believe that this could be somewhat realistic.

First of all, it could be that Scout is so innocent that she did not understand the situation that Atticus and Tom were in.  She probably didn’t think that they were going to kill them when she saw Mr.  Cunningham, because he is supposedly a friend of theirs. She thought that he was a good man, because he had done nice things toward them, and Scout knew his son and invited him over for dinner once.  I think that she believes that everyone is goodhearted.

Furthermore, we should keep in mind that this book is fiction and a lot of strange things happen in this book.  For example, Boo Radley.  I think that his character is more fictional than realistic.  It seems awkward that a person would stay inside his/her house for that long and not have any friends or any contact with the outside world.

In addition,  Atticus says “that proves something-that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still human.”  What I think he is trying to say is that everyone has a soft spot.  In this case, Scout said the appropriate thing at the appropriate time.  She brought them to their senses.  Scout probably made Mr.  Cunningham think about what he was doing.  He was about to kill her father and Tom.

To conclude, I think that Scout’s character is more realistic than fictional.  The point of view that she has toward humanity is so innocent that she believes everyone is good deep inside.

Mockingbirds might represent the main point of the book.  I think they might represent colored people.  My personal opinion on this quote from the book is that considering that the mockingbird can represent colored folks, they don’t do anything bad towards us.  the only thing that colored folks do is help us.

When Scout punched Francis, Uncle Jack did not ask Scout why she did it and only heard what Francis had to say.  Afterwards,  Scout told him her side of the story, and that changed everything.  This is a great example of the importance of point of view.  you should always see things from each person’s point of view, because you don’t know the reason for their actions.

The childhood world of Jem, Scout, and Dill seems like it is a routine. They go to school and when summer comes they get to have fun and play the same games everyday. To me, their childhood is partly boring and at times way to exciting. Some of their games are: make believe they are characters from books or characters from real life, get inside a tire and throw themselves, and making up stories about Mr. Radley. Boo Radley and the children have a distant relationship. The children believe that Boo Radley is going to kill them and things of that nature. They are scared of him; not knowing why he stays inside all the time. From the book reviews that I read online, I think that Boo Radley will play a major role through the book. Maybe, even save the children’s lives. I think he might represent the point of views of different people. No one will really know why Radley won’t come out, or what he is going through until they “walk in his shoes.”

I researched the book “to kill a mockingbird” and found out this information. It is about a girl named Jean Louise Finch who goes by the nickname “scout.” She goes through different experiences that changes her life dramatically. She lives with her father, brother, and a housekeeper in a small town in the south. This book is set back in the days when the racism, discrimination, and prejudice toward african-americans was a big issue in the south. Scout’s father becomes a defense attorney for a black man named Tom Robinson. He is falsely accused of raping a white woman. This has an extrodinary effect on Scout. She begins to see the racism that exist towards African-Americans. Even though Tom’s innocense was clearly shown through the eyes of Scout and her brother, he was found guild and goes to prison. Whenhe tries to escape, he is shot dead. Therefore, the alleged rape victim’s father tries to kill Scout and her brother to get even with their dad for making him look bad in court. Mr. Radley, who has a reputation among the children of being a “large ugly and eveil man”, stabs their attacker. Even though Mr. Radley killed a man, he was not put on trial for murder because he was defending Svout and her brother. After this happens Scout finds hope that there is a chance for improvement in this unfair world.
